READER: The Other End of the Corridor by Sujata Rajpal

Recently I have had the opportunity to interact with the Author Sujatha Rajpal few times. She is a popular Author of the book 'The Other End of the Corridor' which details the despair and pain a helpless woman goes through an abusive relationship. Our Chennai Bloggers Club (CBC) along with Odyssey Book store in Chennai organised a very interesting talk around the topic of domestic violence 'Sense and Sensibility. The thoughts presented by Sujata Rajpal, in discussion with another of our CBC Author, Sharada Vijay was an emotional eye opener for many of us.
During the discussion, she pointed out that most of the domestic violence stems from our fear to talk about it in the open. We hide it within, thinking what people will think, while she vehemently argued that we need to take responsibility for our own happiness and I could not agree more.  She continued that through Leela’s journey, discovering one’s own inhibitions and fears is the real story behind the book. For her the writing has been a passion, though to begin with she was not a writer or even a reader at all. But yet, the 14 years her journey started with some people who came into her life to challenge herself to prove. And she is still thankful to them for their presence in her life, which made her what she is today.

'Sense and Sensibility' by CBC and Odyssey at Adyar
Sujata Rajpal
She gave up her rewarding career as a Corporate Communication & PR professional in an IT MNC to become a full-time author – so far the best decision of her life. Sujata holds an MPhil degree in Economics and has studied Mass Communication from Panjab University, Chandigarh. She also writes articles and short stories for publications and journals, such as Femina, Deccan Herald, Star of Mysore. Her short stories have been published in E Fiction India and Women’s Web. She is a yoga enthusiast and enjoys being a Toastmaster. She currently lives in Mysore.

The book opens up with Leela, in a dark corridor with an inkling of domestic horrors to unfold. This might be the beginning or the end, but it is still there… the dark corridor to pass through. And this is the sense you get through out the book, that there are still some more pain lurking in the back ground which keeps the readers hooked to the book, rooting for Leela to reach out to the light at the end of the corridor.

I enjoyed reading the book, which is fast paced with things happening in almost every page, so one can not skip any. Leela’s desire to become a Radio Jockey through out the book, act as an anchor, that makes the reader hope for things in her life to change from desperation and despair of domestic violence that not only her rich husband unleashes but also people around her subject her too, apart from the obvious mother - in - law. By their silence, even her own family deserts her, when she needed the courage to start a new life.
The writing is fluid, very well crafted with unique mix of middle class sensibility. Makes you feel connected with the characters.

“Julie barked outside as if she saw my virginity walking out of the door.” - a very interesting line from the book.

The email to Jai, makes her emotional outburst, very interesting and true to heart. The development of the characters like Jai, Harleen is life like, very sublime but rings quite true. Not every one is drama queen in our lives. I could relate to Leela holding herself back from ordering food, dealing with her day-to-day financial situation.

Her attempts to break the shackles of violence through out stands out and with introduction of her maid into her life, gives a sense of direction, before she completely breaks down in submission and despair.
It was a pleasure to hear Sujata speak at the event and
take an autographed copy...

Overall a book with a message of hope for all those people out there, suffering from inhuman treatment, specially domestic violence. I enjoyed connecting with it. Click here to buy the book...

UP, CLOSE AND PERSONAL: Experience a slice of life... At Pizza Corner

HOW TO MAKE A PIZZA...
The  final out put...
Thanks to a good friend from Chennai Blogger's Club, Bragadeesh, I was invited to Pizza Corner at Virugambakkam outlet, to actually make a pizza and eat it too. along with many other delicious dishes and loads of drinks... and I did ended up making Panjabi Curry Masala with lots of Jalepeno's, Mushroom and Olives, which I always thought the chef's always held back their hands while sprinkling them on the Pizza Bread. Thanks are also due to Deepa Pillai from Bangalore, who organised an event around giving a Pizza making experience to most of the Chennai bloggers... So here is a learning and hope the guys at Pizza Corner learn a thing or two.

But first of all.. What is a pizza?
The modern pizza was invented in Naples, Italy, and the dish has since become popular in many parts of the world.  Many varieties of pizza exist worldwide, along with several dish variants based upon pizza. In 2009, upon Italy's request, Neapolitan pizza was safeguarded in the European Union as a Traditional Specialty Guaranteed dish. The word pizza originates from the Latin verb pìnsere ("to press") and from the Greek pitta (derived from ancient Greek pēktos, πηκτός, meaning "solid" or "clotted"). A popular urban legend holds that the archetypal pizza,
My Punjabi Masala Pizza,
the recipe is confidential

Pizza Margherita, was invented in 1889, when the Royal Palace of Capodimonte commissioned the Neapolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita. Pizza migrated to America with the Italians. After World War II many returning soldiers who were stationed in Italy created a high demand for the pizza they encountered and tasted in Italy.

In India…
Another Try out..
Pizza is an emerging fast food in Indian urban areas. American pizza chains Domino's Pizza and Pizza Hut opened their first outlets in India in 1996. Domestic pizza brands include Smokin' Joes and Pizza Corner. Indian pizzas are generally spicier and more veggie-oriented than those in other countries. For instance, oregano spice packs are included with a typical pizza order in India instead of Parmesan cheese.

The Norwegians eat most pizza in the world according to a survey by ACNielsen 2004, 5,4 kg/year per capita. 50 million frozen pizzas were sold that year, with consumption being 22,000 tons of frozen pizza, 15,000 tons of home-baked and 13,000 tons of restaurant-made pizzas.

OK, we have heard about the negatives about Pizza, here is something positive…
My Punjabi Masala Pizza
Ready to eat...

European nutrition research on the eating habits of people with cancer of the mouth, oesophagus, throat or colon showed those who ate pizza at least once a week had less chance of developing cancer. Dr Silvano Gallus, of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmaceutical Research in Milan, attributed it to lycopene, an antioxidant chemical in tomatoes, which is thought to offer some protection against cancer…

Enough History and back ground, now let’s go and make one Pizza…
Deepa Pillai - Our Host of the day
Well, first of all, let me say that it was such a nice idea from Pizza Corner to invite common people like us to experience their "Slice of Life" and it made our day.

To begin with, I was not able to find the place as my mind’s GPS has latched on to someone’s suggestion from The Chennai Blogger’s Club that it’s just behind Koyambedu Veg Market and I went around in circles till the time I called Deepa, our host from Bangalore, who expertly got me at the outlet within 15 minutes. As I reached there, the Blogger’s gang was already in full flow of their creative output… I was asked to wear the hair cap, before I entered the Cooking area, which was always out of bounds for me as a customer… The Pizza corner team was all there, explaining, guiding and demonstrating on the way to making a lovely pizza. So here are some of the images, how it all went.. hope you will enjoy the experience too…

The Process...

The Gang...

Well the poster's don't lie... at Pizza Corner.

And we all had great fun, making our own pizza...

STILL LIFE: Chennai Light House

From the very beginning, Light house's have fascinated me and when there was a talk of visiting Chennai Light house as it has been recently opened for public at our Chennai Bloggers Club, I was ready to join with my handy camera. It was looking to be one of the outings that seemed to be washed as by the time I reached there, it was cloudy and drizzling but ended up on a very informative and interactive note. As I reached the Light House at Marina beach, the serpentine que and the imminent threat of hurricane subdued my enthusiasm to view the city from an interesting vantage point. No one was there from the group and as I went back to my car, I spotted the friends from CBC and decided to wait for others to join us, as we sipped hot cup of Kaapi...

So here is some images from the trip, hope you will enjoy with me...

A BRIEF NOTE ON THE CHENNAI LIGHT HOUSE...

The present light house at Marina beach is the 4th light house of Chennai and one of the tallest light houses in India, which can be seen from 28 nautical miles. It was built by the East Coast Constructions and Industries in 1976 replacing the old lighthouse in the northern direction. The lighthouse was opened in January 1977. It also houses the meteorological department and was restricted to visitors. On 16 November 2013, it was reopened to visitors. It is one of the few lighthouses in the world and the only one in India with an elevator. It is also the only lighthouse in India within the city limits.
(Text Curtsy Wikipedia, click here to read more...)
The light houses of Colloseum and Alaxandria was prominently
displayed in Museum, at the Ground Floor.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the Tallest manmade structure
in the world for centuries.

Finally, we decided to join in the long que in drizzling rain, hoping
to get the entry, before it closes at 5PM.

While there were others who focused on enjoying the sea...

Though, Chennai Light house is the only one in India with a lift, every one
decide to climb it

And the iconic view of Marina Beach...

After the visit to the Light House, a session of photography and
visit to the interesting museum, time for a group pic

And some of us headed towards the sea...

And enjoyed the beautiful weather ....

30th Edition of Shadow Dancing With Mind - A Great Year for Blogging

WELCOME TO THE 30TH EDITION OF SHADOW DANCING WITH MIND

This is probably going to be the last Edition of Shadow Dancing with Mind of the year
2013. Its been a wonderful blogging journey… won the award for TOP INDIAN BLOGGER hit another milestone of 300K hits at my blog… got an offer to write a book about blogging to be distributed across India through Landmark Book stores… feels good but personally I have learned a lot… blogging made me a better person, I guess as it lead me to introspect every now and then about things that I was doing at the time and working towards the things still stuck in future. But yes its been a great journey Friends and thank you all for being with me sharing my joy, reading my thoughts and Haiku … hope my blogposts have helped you some how as it always does for me…

SO HERE IS ANOTHER EDITION FOR YOU TO READ AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU LIKE IT… CHEERS!!!

After many years, I started reading Tao Te Ching (the translation by R B Blakney) again and
realize again that the real great books always gives deeper insight, every time you read it. The book “Tao Te Ching” by Lao Tzu is the most translated book in the world after Bible and reading these books, actually can transport one to the ancient times and align with the thought processes that started thousands of years back and still survive the test of living mankind’s journey across time. To understand the early history of human lives and its meaning, the old books are far better than the archeological remains. Just like the Veda’s for Hindus, perhaps to know more about those ancient civilization, books like “Tao Te Ching” gives a better perspective and insight.

Why 85% of the 3rd generation of Successful Family Businesses, are not able to hold on to their lead in wealth creation and in some cases completely fade out? Why the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi is not a permanent occupant of most of the Family Business establishments?

STILL LIFE:
Recently one of my friends asked me, which temple I visit to meditate and practice sadhana and I said, "You don't need a temple, just sit down any where on the banks of Holy River Ganges, you will find peace". And I believe it so... as many of the Rishi, Saints and Sadhu's have been doing Tapasya in and around this place for thousands of years and the Ganges has been the source of their energy...

It was a real pleasure to meet interesting people in my meeting with Chennai Bloggers Club members and tried to capture some of those moments... Here it is ... I hope you will enjoy it...

This section is about sharing thoughts and some of the Haiku that have had me thinking… hope you will like it…
