“Certain facts from history often make me want to explore the personalities involved and their possible motivation. " - Tony Nash

Anthony Frederick Nash (Tony Nash used as author name) is a dreamer, who dreams through the medium of research into ancient happenings and incidents. Having written 28 books, the dream is still alive and that’s also the reason for publishing this book - his interest in his ancestors. He researched them back to 1648, and on the way he found out that at about that time there were two brothers farming an estate. One stole everything he could lay his hands on and went off to America, leaving his brother almost destitute. That is the happening that triggers all the fictional subsequent action in the book.

‘From Heaven to Hell via the First Fleet’
The legal system of the late eighteenth century, when hundreds of innocent people are being sentenced for crimes they have not committed, many to death, claims another victim. Talented but poor Norfolk farmer Thomas Nash is impatient for Michaelmas 1786, when he will pay his benevolent mentor, Lord Rainforde, the final instalment on an 85-year-old loan and restore his family’s fortunes, but Fate is laughing in the wings.

Lord Rainforde is murdered and his title usurped by his illegitimate nephew, Silas, who desires Thomas’ land, and on that Michaelmas Day, so eagerly looked forward to for so long by Thomas and his wife, their lives are shattered as they are arrested on trumped up charges, leading to conviction and transportation to New Holland on the infamous First Fleet.

The dire suffering on that voyage, in ships unsuited to the task and with motley crews who have never before sailed to those waters and have no idea of the diabolical dangers awaiting them, is only the beginning of the convicts’ troubles. Not content with their disgrace and banishment, Silas Rainforde has sent men to kill Thomas and Martha, to ensure that they can never attempt to reclaim their land.

Flogged mercilessly by those men and told he is being taken away to die, Thomas, with nothing to lose, dives overboard from a moving ship into shark infested waters in a desperate attempt to escape, but falls foul of his pursuers and is wounded by gunfire and horribly disfigured by fire.

With the help of an aborigine he has previously befriended he escapes into the outback, where he joins a band of aborigine women whose men folk have died from the smallpox epidemic, brought to their country by the newcomers…

INSPIRATIONS
My inspiration to write comes from the ideas for plots that come to me at the strangest moments, often when I am semi-somnolent. Also, certain facts from history often make me want to explore the personalities involved and their possible motivation. I have used such facts to a great extent in my war books: ‘A Handful of Courage’ and ‘No Tears Tomorrow’, as well as in ‘A Handful of Destiny’.

CHALLENGES
The biggest challenge in writing the book was the amount of research required. Every historical particular I have included is accurate, including the 18th century Aborigine words used, which are different to the modern words.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK

1. “…the bucolic farmer, who loved every moment of that life; the feel of the plough handles jerking under his hands as he breathed the faint, vinegary, damp smell of his old horse pulling it; … the smell of new mown hay, of cider fermenting, of the blooms of the rambler roses that grew outside the front door and of brimstone during a thunderstorm.”

2. “For seventeen days and nights, ferocious storms in the Roaring Forties had the decks of all the vessels under water throughout the twenty-four hours of each day, and the salt water, which reached every nook and cranny… on the few occasions that the salt dried, it itched worse than the lice…”

3. “Martha turned her back to hide the fierce love pain that pierced her heart, tears springing to her eyes. Thomas was alive and safe. How long had Arthur known, she wondered, and why had Thomas not wanted to see her? Could he not know that she would love him no matter how disfigured he might be? Did he no longer love her?
She wondered how she could possibly hide from Arthur the knowledge and the joy that the only man she could ever truly love was alive. Not only alive, but nearby.”

4. “Is there any one thing that could make it more complete for you, Martha?’
She smiled, ‘It was perfect. The only thing that could is impossible even for my wizard of a husband.’
‘And that is?’
‘For a sight of my first-born.’
‘But he is in England.’
She sighed heavily, ‘Yes, indeed.’
He turned and held his hand over his eyes, looking down the hill into the descending dusk. ‘Perhaps if your wizard should wave his magic wand?’ He waved both arms as if signaling with semaphore.
She followed his gaze.
Approaching fast was a lone horseman, spurring his mount urgently up the hill towards the house…”

______
Tony believes that in publishing a book, there is some ego involved: the wish to be a successful author. But that takes a second place to the main reason he writes and publishes his books.

Art seems to be in me, wanting to get out.” - Tony Nash

At first, for him it was music; he taught himself music and to play the piano, and then the electronic keyboard. Then he began to write music. After that it was oil painting. He did, around forty years ago, write two books, for which he tried to find a publisher, but then went on to writing television plays for five years, giving up only when a local television producer he met at a party told him that she read all the plays submitted to our local studio, including his. She said, ‘we are the smallest TV company in the UK and we receive five hundred plus plays per month. We put on one half-hour play per month. The BBC receives something like twenty thousand. You can do the math.’

Breaking into the big-time with books is even harder. With a million n new books published every year, the odds are greater than winning the lottery.” - Tony Nash

Even then, Tony says that if some one close to him like his daughter or wife (though they are delighted that he writes), he would refuse. He thinks he would explode with the numerous ideas that continually pour from his imagination. In any case, he would become far less animate being if he stops to write.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT HIM

I survived a boating accident, where the boatman drowned and I was in 3.5C water for five minutes short of two hours, being described as a ‘walking miracle by the doctors, since they insisted that no one lives beyond ten minutes is such temperature. It took three days to bring my body temperature back to normal. I have been within an inch of death on twenty-three occasions, including shark attack.

TWO BIG THINGS OF HIS LIFE
My two greatest achievements are the gaining of the Honours Degree after five years of solitary study, and living through that boating accident (from which I was saved by my guardian angel, for the fourth time)

HIS FAVORITE BOOKS
GENRE: Murder Mystery
For many years, I have made a deep study of forensic medicine, and with that genre I can include much of what I have learnt, lending authenticity and originality to the novels. Of my own books, the two I love most are ‘Murder on Tiptoes’, which introduced my first detective, Tony Dyce, a thoroughly nice guy, and ‘Carve Up’, which brings to life my second, John Hunter, a flawed, brasher model.

BOOKS:
My favourite author is Dick Francis, whose books appear so simply written, and yet are magic to read. I try to emulate his style. If I had to nominate books by other authors, they would include any by Wilbur Smith or Clive Cussler, some of Patricia Cornwell’s and some of Kathy Reichs, but I love all forms of literature and have read two books a week for all my life, including early German, French and Spanish works.

_______
“I was inspired to write because of the kindness and generosity of a single American who transformed my life.” - Francis Mandewah

As I got to interact with Francis Mandewah for his spotlight on my blog, I got to know the man behind the book. He shared some incidences along with some of the quotes from the book that became turning points in his life.

He had dropped out of school, was physically beaten by cruel cousin, and badly wanted to go to school, when he came across Tom Johnson. Meeting Tom and taking him to the Catholic school, paying his school fees for the whole year, wearing uniform, boarding home – were all miraculous events in his life that happened beyond his wildest dream.

In other instance, he says God came to his rescue through a good Samaritan, in the middle of the Sahara Desert. He says that he knew that he may never see the old man and his wife who saved his life in the Sahara Desert and considers it to be God’s blessings - God coming to my rescue. However, having to deal and endure the ravages of racism CREATED IMBIVALENCE in him; on one hand, it was a White Man, Tom Johnson his benefactor, who generously gave him opportunity, brought him to America, treated with respect and dignity. He generously gave him sustained support and opportunity so that he could realize his American dream.  On the other hand, it was A White Man who (through racism) took away and caused him to lose his job.

No One Country is immune for human challenges among its diverse peoples; therefore, I work to forgive the acts of the cruel ones and renew, in the interim I renew my commitment to living a full life according to God’s plan for me.” - Francis Mandewah

BRIEF NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A social justice advocate, Francis has 14 years of experience as a probation and parole agent with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. He is a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Ferguson, Missouri, where he currently resides and works as a counselor at a correctional facility.

HIS INSPIRATIONS
I was inspired to write because of the miracle that God performed in my life when I was a 15-year old poor boy in my home country of Sierra Leone, and because a single individual person’s act of kindness and generosity transformed my life forever. I write to appreciate to appreciate gratitude and to be a service to my fellow man, to be an inspiration in other people’s lives, and to give back to humanity through service to my fellow human being.

CHALLENGES
Having to re-live my past, the writing and re-writing, organizing, etc.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK
1) On the way I walked in a Haze. I was in shock over the miracle that has just happened in my life”
2) What did I do to deserve such a blessings?
3) As I grabbed my bag about to walk to the convoy, I sensed her approaching. I turned and reached out and grabbed both her hands. I bowed and thanked her. She embraced me while tears ran down my cheeks.
4) I have worked to forgive the bad act of the cruel ones, and in the interim I renew my commitment to living full life according to God’s divine plan for me.

Francis says that he likes all these quotes because…
…They were all turning trying times and at the same time turning points in my life.

An African boy from the region made famous by the Hollywood movie “BLOOD DIAMOND” is befriended by an America pilot who was employed by the diamond industry in Sierra Leone to fly boxes of gems and alluvial diamonds from Yengema to Freetown, where a British Airways jet would fly the gemstones to London.  That friendship brought great opportunities and blessings that affirm the boy’s in a God of miracles. But the boy’s journey also brings many trials and tribulations that test the boys courage, strength and endurance.

This American pilot met and befriended young Francis Mandewah, an impoverished Sierra Leonean boy and gave him generous support that eventually took him to America. Along the way, Francis had many harrowing experiences, including crossing the Sahara Desert, which almost cost him his life. His challenges continued in Europe and other places including Mali, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily-Italy, Greece, Turkey, England and in America. In the end Francis became aware that his real voice that emerged from all his trials and tribulations is one of deep faith, and gratitude for God’s miracles and wonders in his life.

______
Francis took almost an year to write this book - a story with real potential, a story that the American people yearn to read about, a story that has a targeted market – Christian community, and the wider population. When asked what other thing he likes to do if not writing, he says he will do volunteer work. He would like to work for the Homeless in the soup kitchens, Salvation Army, volunteer his time to the community, be a big brother, mentor at-risks youths. His idea is to give back the support he had, while growing up by being an inspiration to others, be a positive role model.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT HIM
He loves adventure and travelling to faraway places and experiencing other cultures.  He is an extrovert, easily adaptable and assimilate quickly, loves to travel.

TWO BIG THINGS OF HIS LIFE
Coming to America and getting education apart from being a service to fellow man.

SPOTLIGHT: The Politics of Unity: An Invitation to the High Road by Michael Cuddehe

Spotlight is my small effort to support upcoming authors in their effort to reach their readers. And yes, it is FREE, however to be featured in this section, you need to go through a selection process, please click here for details.
_______
“The wealth of a nation is like the blood in the body. It needs to circulate everywhere in order to maintain optimal health.” Michael Cuddehe

When the author of the book Michael Cuddehe told me that the purpose of "The Politics of Unity" is to enliven Dharma in public life, my interest in his book grew. As I read more and get to know Michael better through my interactions, I realized that the reason he wrote the book is different. Yes there is a mix of ego i.e. get to be known as an ‘Author’ - probably make some money and get invited to talks etc. but more importantly, I believe he wrote the book from the historical perspective and with a political purpose. There is a good mix of Aesthetic enthusiasm as well, which makes the book more readable as well.

BRIEF NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Cuddehe is a veteran market analyst, trader and fund manager. He has spent the last 35+ years tracking and analyzing global political and economic developments and is currently the Managing Member of Strategic Global Advisors, LLC. He is the publisher of Risk & Opportunity, a quarterly political and economic newsletter, and the author of "Chronicle of Catastrophe: A Contemporaneous History of the Bush Years."
Mr. Cuddehe has been active in politics as a candidate for U.S. Representative and as a member of the Platform and Executive Committees of the Natural Law Party. He is a Certified Teacher of
The Transcendental Meditation Program, and a founding member of E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs), an NRDC affiliate, which works with business leaders dedicated to promoting environmentally sound public policy and business practices.

HIS INSPIRATIONS
Purpose – to make a meaningful contribution to Humanity.

CHALLENGES
Satisfying my editor.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK
“The wealth of a nation is like the blood in the body. It needs to circulate everywhere in order to maintain optimal health.”

“Left/right, conservative/liberal are the left and right legs of the body politic. They are both needed to move forward.”

“A self-realized individual, giving expression to his/her full potential, will spontaneously live and operate in harmony with natural law, becoming an asset to society. Brick by brick, a society composed of such self-actualized individuals will spontaneously become an ideal society.”

“How different our national life would be if the universal perspective of the wholeness of life were a lively backdrop to political process and policy considerations. It would provide a supportive foundation for mutual respect, honorable process, conflict resolution and the crafting of policy solutions meeting the needs of all parties, and society as a whole.”

These quotes summarize the practical application of the principles of balance, transcendence and natural law which, when enlivened, will mark the rise of dharma in public life.

THE BOOK
Our technological ascendance is presenting us alternately with the means to create heaven on earth, or to destroy ourselves utterly. The outcome of this transition is dependent on how we organize our affairs and conduct our relationships with each other—our politics.

In 'The Politics of Unity', Michael Cuddehe identifies the primitive thinking, perverse incentives and political dynamics keeping us divided, distracted, and stuck on the low road of endless conflict, and then lays out 10 steps to the restoration of a healthy political process, opening the door to the creation of a better, more sustainable world, utilizing our technology for the good of all.

"The Politics of Unity" is a guide to the high road in the political process; a social blueprint for a better world.

______
Michael tells me that the first draft of the book was done in 1990 and the final iteration took a year. He thinks of his book as a guide to the high road in the political process; a social blue print for a better world. When asked if he would stop writing if some one asked him to, he says that it is unlikely. If he did, then he would probably continue his focus on markets and trading, and/or teaching. The favorite spot for his writing is his office. The energy of the place and the organization is supportive and he finds no disturbance, which is conducive to his writing style.

He is a world class trader, in 80’s was in top five Commodity Trading Advisor and adds with a smile - a good father as well.

He is currently developing a workshop entitled “Bridging the Partisan Divide: Nonviolent Politics” to offer…
- A model of healthy politics that will produce optimal policy without partisan warfare.
- A method for engaging in constructive dialog with people who disagree with you.
- Understanding of the forces systematically creating division, mistrust and conflict in our society.
- The knowledge and tools needed to neutralize the impact of these forces on your life.

He also plans to begin publishing on his blog to coincide with his workshop.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT HIM
I am 94% Irish, the balance Scottish and English; grew up in the Navy, moving every few years; went to Catholic school. I love the mountains - have been to Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath. Met Bichendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mt. Everest, on the path to Tapovan, after her climb of Shivling mountain. Love the ocean too – lived in Malibu and Laguna Niguel.
