CURTAIN RAISER BNLF V: Purba Ray - Keynote Speaker

Never underestimate the power of your words, the reach of your blog” - Purba Ray

Purba Ray is a keynote speaker “At Blog Now, Live Forever” - The Most Disruptive Conference on Blogging, conceptualized and hosted by IndiBlogger on 31st Oct - 1st Nov, Mumbai
____________
The Blog Now, Live Forever is an event, which is carefully constructed from the ground-up to give you a front seat to amazing insights into the world of blogging!
_____________
Purba Ray - Impatience, enthusiasm, optimism.
A Bengali born in Delhi, who is unable to befriend people more interested in the number of bedrooms in her apartment. The epic list of her pet peeves includes zealous parents who are proud for no reason. She vents her angst writing damning posts on her blog and praying no one reads them. But then people do read and relate to her so much so that she has been winner of numerous awards. She has contributed articles for IBN live, NRI Section of TOI and currently blogs for Huffington post.

Sharp writing, intelligent humor, thought-provoking articles makes her happy. Being surrounded by love and positivity is the oxygen for life. She is passionate about experiencing the new, be it through travelling, food or the people she meets.

So friends and fellow blogger, here are some of her thoughts on diverse topics, in her own a-musing style: A little sweet, a little tangy and very very spicy.

About her journey:
What do you do when you suddenly have time on your hands after quitting your job? You do what you’d always wanted to but never had time for – articulate your thoughts and start scribbling on your notepad. Soon it’s a Note on Facebook that finds its way to a friend’s widely read blog.

Encouraged by the overwhelming response and generous praise, you start fancying yourself as a writer and pen a few more posts for other forums.  A few months down the line, you create your own blog. Because you have no idea what blogging is, you grandly make 11 blogs for the 11 posts you’ve written that far till a helpful reader points it out for you to fix!

About her Blog: A-Musing
I wasn’t out to impress my readers with my vocabulary. I just wanted them to relate to what I had to say.  All I knew was I shouldn’t be sounding preachy and talking down to my audience. So I chose to write like I was talking to a friend whose attention I had to grab with wit, sarcasm and self-deprecating humor.

I started with the safest subject – me – and poked fun at myself. Why give others the chance when you can do such a perfect job of it yourself! For some reason, people liked my personal anecdotes, my little struggles and my little victories, peppered with a bit of humor. Maybe it reminded them of their own lives, their neighborhoods, their social milieu. I don’t really know.

About India and Indian Bloggers

This might sound clichéd, but India truly is a country of contrasts. The poor and the wealthy, the modern and the regressive, the proud and the despondent, the free and the shackled. But to me, the overarching message is one of optimism, of striving to do better in life.

Indian bloggers can make a difference. At a time when news is more of subversive, divisive propaganda and news channels a constant cacophony of misplaced indignation, we can be the voice of reason. At a time when what we should be watching, reading and consuming is being dictated to us, we need to assert our freedom to decide for ourselves. As bloggers, we can write what the media ignores or has forgotten about, raise awareness about issues that no one dares to talk about.

The blogging community is yet to take their role as influencers seriously. Maybe a few of us have succeeded in influencing public opinion, done our bit of good, called out on injustices. But on a collective basis, unlike Twitter, we hardly have a presence in public consciousness. We are still viewed as a bunch of elitists who rant and indulge in token activism.

“Bloggers can be the voice of the people, we can be the platform for debate.” - Purba Ray

My only advice – never underestimate the power of your words, the reach of your blog.

On Women Empowerment
"As long as we wait for men to treat us as equals, we will never be empowered."

It’s not a fight for equality. Each gender is unique, let’s acknowledge it rather than engage in a game of one-upmanship. More seriously, though, true empowerment would mean that a woman, regardless of her social and economic station, can make her own choice. We are decades away from reaching that stage, isn’t it?

Friends and fellow blogger, I hope you have enjoyed the 5th post in the series of curtain raiser on BNLF, now let’s get ready to hear her thoughts on 'How To Face Public Reaction' in her Key Note address at BNLF event 31st Oct - 1st Nov, in Mumbai.

NEWS: Would You Like To Collaborate On A Book About Blogging?

The last one and half  month has been amazing for my social media journey. Won the prestigious award Indian Blogger Award 2013 for the things I am passionate about, "Religion and Spirituality" and then one of the Publishing House offered to Publish "A book on Blogging", which will be distributed across India by Landmark (The Book Store of Tata's). [The publishing house has scheduled this book to be published by March 2014 and I have to give the final manuscript at the end of Dec 2013]

After the awards announcement, as I reached out to many of the winners, I have been able to meet some of very interesting people from IBAward2013 during my travels to Delhi, Pune, Rishikesh, Dehradun and of course Chennai. It was a great fun, meeting them and sharing thoughts, our blogging journey and our experiences. Most of them agreed that it will be a pleasure to meet at a common place some time so working towards organizing a meet up shortly.

Another interesting aspect of our meeting was to share the above writing opportunity and seek collaboration. In order to make this book more interesting, I asked most of the bloggers I met, to collaborate, by writing one chapter of the book on a specific topic and I was happy to see that most of them were excited to be a part of the book.

Now, if you are interested to collaborate with me on this book, by writing one chapter on specific topic of your choice and expertise. (All due credits will be given as well as an image along with brief note on the author of the chapter as well as social media links will be provided in the book). Please let me know, through my email ID, shashidhar.sharma@gmail.com along with tentative topic of "blogging" you would like to write about.

PLEASE NOTE, YOU NEED TO BE A SERIOUS INDIAN BLOGGER TO COLLABORATE WITH ME ON THIS BOOK

Up, Close & Personal : Indiblogger Meet At ITC Grand Chola

Indiblogger meet is always fun and when they organised the first of it's kind, meet as Anup from Indiblogger informed, - a preview of hotel, in the same hotel, it was bound to be fun. And when it's for one of the most grand Hotel in Chennai, ITC Grand Chola, the seats were bound to fall short and the registration for the event were full even before half of the bloggers from Chennai got to know about it. It was good that Indiblogger increased at the last moment the number of seats from 70 to 75 and I got to be in the most beautiful event so far from Indiblogger "TreatsForTweets"....

But before I go further with the fun part of the event, let me give you some interesting facts about the most beautiful hotel in town.

A Sustainable Design:

Opened as the world's largest LEED-certified platinum (Highest in the category) green hotel, is 100 per cent powered by renewable energy. It recycles all its water and generates sustainable energy, through wind farms in Salem (Tamil Nadu – India), for the whole of its electricity needs.

The Architecture:

ITC Grand Chola is themed after traditional Hindu architecture of the Chola Dynasty. This architectural theme is reinforced with 462 pillars, most of them with hand-carved design work. The hotel has over 1 million square feet of marble with 57 varieties of the stone. The intricate stonework in the building was created by 4,000 artisans from Mamallapuram who worked on site.

The hotel is comprised of 600 rooms, which include 522 rooms and 78 serviced apartments. The hotel has a total of 10 food and beverage destinations, including the Peshawri, which serves cuisine from the Northwest Frontier, and The Royal Vega, a vegetarian restaurant. Others include Madras Pavilion, Cafe Mercara, Nutmeg, Cheroot Lounge, Pan Asian, Modo Mio, The Pub and Tranquebar. The Leisure facilities will include a 23,000-sq-ft Kaya Kalp Spa, outdoor pools, gyms for each of the three wings, and a shopping area.

Now coming back to the event... The huge hall, where the event was happening was stunning and the arrangement of seats gave us lots of room to move around. Now I could understand the reason for less number of people invited as the ITC Grand wanted to give us lots of room to move about and not to cramp our Indiblogging style...

This was proved to be true as later on Anup got us to make the biggest blogger train and chug along the whole hall...
The event started, right on time IST and we have had great presentations from GM and other dignitaries of ITC Grand and then it was time for our usual 60 seconds of fame..

This time atleast I got a chance to talk, unlike my last Indiblogger meet at Hyatt. Anyways, once every one has had his/her share of limelight, Anup got into his grove with clarion call of hurr... and pump-ed up the jam with getting every one to form a human train...  Once every one has hitched on to it and settled, we were asked for a repeat performance of UN Chief -  Ban Ki-Moon. Yes! do the gangnum style and here is the result...

But that was not the end of the story, for our master of ceremony - Anup. He dangled some great treats from the ITC Grand Team and masterfully guided us to one of the biggest musical chair that I have had ever seen....

After all the fun and frolic we were all treated to an amazing array of tea, coffee and snacks and then the ITC Team has arranged for us a grand tour of the Grand Hotel. The Indibloggers were divided the team into groups of ten and assigned a Host/Hostess to escort us as well as enhance the Grand Chola Experience.

My group was assigned smiling Ms. Neelam, who were thoroughly patient with our exhuberance and unceasing question and comments.

Here are some images from the tour...

The Haiku Gang...

and electronics in a well appointed room

I was thrilled to find this M F Hussain Painting

And the beautiful decor...
It was a pleasure to interact with the ITC Grand Chola team...

...  attentive to all our questions and queries.

Finally we were back to our hall and waiting for the results of our tweets... and the winner are ...
The Poonam Pandaya Gang..
And from our Team Haiku...
Siraj
But no one was left out... ITC Team gave each one of coupons for a dinner for two, any time till the new year... So in the end folks, it was a great pleasure and FUN-tastik time. Kudo's to Indiblogger Team, Renie and Anup for making this Chennai Bloggers Meet so memorable for all of us as well as giving us the opportunity to appreciate, what an amazing ITC Grand Chola is - Sustainability with Responsible Luxury.

Here I am signing off from our Team Haiku...

___________
I have had met Renie Revin almost a year back at one of the Social Media meet organised by another good friend. Renie's talk interested me to get on to the IndiBlogger and share thoughts with another passionate bloggers from across the world...  and last sunday, it was the first time I attended the blogger meet. It was a great journey from being a individual blogger for personal satisfaction to connecting with like minded people from all walks of life....

Here are my impressions from the Tata Grande Indiblogger Meet, a story in pics...

The Tata Grande that was the vehicle that launched the Chennai Meet

The first thing that hits you, as soon as you enter the venue at the newly opened Hyatt Hotel at Chennai, with its huge presence is the SUV "Tata Grande" and the it leads you on to the hall where eager Indiblogger team is waiting to welcome you with there stamping and registering your presence by logging on to the Indiblogger...

The IndiBlogger team was in all readiness and soon the hall started filling up... the silent man behind all this activity, the founder of IndiBlogger, Renie Ravin quietly slipped behind a huge poster, and kept the activity going.... all around him

As soon as the Tata Team arrived, the stage was set for the 49 Seconds of Fame... where 75 participants are asked to introduce themselves and their blog within 49 seconds. If you cross then you are asked 'Go to Jail" Some of the 49 seconders .... sharing their moment of truth

The other side of 49ers...

This session ended with a call for lovely High Tea... which I thoroughly enjoyed discussing with The Tata Grande team and some of the new friends I have had made instantly at the meet... As we all trickled back to attend the rest of the program, we were treated with a quite a few great presentation... Mathi was at his best, talking about Blogologues...

Yes we are all one...
Then we moved on to an interesting time to interact with more than 250 bloggers, who were attending the meet... with our charts and sketch pen's. It was fun to go around and introduce your self and ask for comments... I had my almost filled up both sides.. but then there were great people, who could actually find more than 100 people in the short time of 30 minutes to write at their board... And then actually one of the 'Rowdy Girl of the meet' won a prize for that beautiful comment on her sheet....

Some were seriously putting their thoughts...

Some were having the time of their life...

Calling all the "Sketch Pens" Back...
Then it was the time for some serious discussion... divided into sections... like Chennai, Cars & travels, Blogging... etc. The team in the middle turned it into interesting games...

Finally it was time for photo session and getting the cool T-shirt from IndiBlogger...

I had enjoyed my first meet thoroughly and meeting the face behind such beautiful, thought provoking blogs, that I have been reading for almost a year... There are so many great talented people out there... you just need to reach out ... I did in the meet and look forward to more interaction.... how about starting Chennai Chapter @ IndiBlogger...?

Tata Grande Presentation
Oh Yes... "Yeah Dil Maange More" Look forward to more such lovely initiatives from IndiBlogger...
