My book "Songs of the Mist" journey across India...

One of the reasons, I am writing the three book series, "The Monk Key" of which "Songs of the Mist", is the first part, is to share the story of one young man's journey to 'find the divinity within'. As the series was conceived on the banks of holy river Ganges, in 1987 and firmed up across my travels to Rishikesh  Varanasi, Ganga Sagar. So it has been my deepest desire to offer it to that divine sources from which it draws its stories, energy and its blessings.

The another purpose of writing this book has been to reach out to the young generation who, in my opinion are alienated from the deep source of our culture, heritage and thoughts - our ancient scriptures. When asked, if they have read our Vedas, Purana's and Upanishad's etc., they typically reply "What is the point of reading them" due the certain biases rooted in modernity. The book "Songs of the Mist" is one such attempt to share the knowledge and thoughts of Karma Yoga, based on Bhagwat Gita; in order to inspire them to connect proactively with our cultural heritage. At the book's launch at Chennai's famous book store, I shared my thoughts on the same.

My book "Songs of the Mist" was published in Dec, 2016 and within 9 days it reached two thousand ranking amongst millions of books at Amazon. In April 2016, it breached double digit ranking. Within a period of 6 months, I have been blessed with opportunities to fulfil my desire to dedicate the book to its sources of inspiration. From the Himalayas to plains of India, I have had few opportunities to dedicate the book to Holy Ganges, at Rishikesh, Varanasi, Kolkata; Goddess Durga of our ancient temple in the eastern UP village and Buddha Shrine at Kushinagar - a place where Buddha attained Nirvana. Through book readings and launches, I have also been blessed to reach out to the readers of young India.

It gives me a great pleasure to share some of the images and few video clips, chronicling my book's journey across India. Hope you will enjoy it.

Here is an introduction to my book by the Famous Author, Journalist and Writer, Timeri N Murari at the Leela Palace Hotels, organised by Apparao Galleries in an event called "An Evening of Art, Music and Writing".

"Many of us here yearn for something more in our life. Shashi has provided a spiritual release in beautiful book, Songs of the Mist. It’s unusual and thought provoking book. The book answers questions that we struggle to frame in our daily lives. Shashi’s descriptive beauty of the mystic nature of Himalayas interwoven with sufferings and the heartaches, and struggle of each protagonist, provide eloquent and thought provoking read. Not a book to browsed at glance and to reach books full potential demands commitment and investment of time to savor its subtlety and do grows." - Timeri N Murari

At the Odyssey Book Launch, the popular Rapper - Blaaze (Baba Rap, Hosanna Rap, Slum Dog Millionaire, Delhi 6 etc.) and Keshav Ji - The Famous Cartoonist of the News Paper Group Hindu, who is foremost Krishna Bhakta echoed my thoughts about our ancient Indian Heritage and culture...

“When you just listen to it (Shlokas etc), …the sanskrit syllables are enough to get you positive energy, without knowing anything about it. … it can only bring peace in a world like this”. – Blaaze

“Our Purana’s (Ancient Vedic Scriptures etc.) give you how to deal with life, how to deal with situations and predicaments, as they have already analyzed and laid it out on platter so that you don’t have to think.” – Keshav ji

WANDERLUST: The Path Within (Part 2) - Two Days in Rishikesh

As I was in Delhi during the time of Kanwar Yatra, I thought of going to Rishikesh to bring Ganga Jal (Holy Ganges Water) for the rituals in home. So here is my pilgrimage to Rishikesh from Dehradun divided in Two Parts, (due to the length of the post was too big to be unleashed on un-suspecting readers). The story below is from the day two in Rishikesh. To read the FIRST part, DAY ONE, click here…

(Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion--at that time I descend Myself. For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked and for the establishment of righteousness, I am born in every age.)
– BHAGWAT GITA CHAPTER IV – SHLOKA 7 & 8
(To hear a beautiful rendition of this shloka, please click here..)

The day two started with my nephew Aniket Pandey, who joined me from Dehradun and my host of the day was Swami Omkarananda, previously of Sivananda Ashram. My old friend Swami Yatidharmananda, who is traveling europe in order to spread knowledge of yoga, specially requested me to meet him to design and work on the Yoga Ashram being created through the help of some of our friends. Swami Omkaranada ji is an amazing personality. Traveled far and wide, did his PhD in Metaphysics from Japan, studied with buddhist monks in Tibet and had to leave the place incognito, when Chinese Govt ordered all the monks to leave. His thought process, his clarity of vision and desire to promote yoga across the world is exemplery. There are people like Swami ji, who make this devbhoomi a spiritual place. After morning rituals and meditation, we reached Swami ji's Yoga Ashram near Ram Jhoola.

The place of stay, just above the bank of river Ganges, afford a lovely view of the river, the bridge and the ashrams and hills across. My favorite sand beach is now submoerged in the flood of river Ganges but still having early morning bath, on the ghat visible from the room is still the same. The clouds over shadow the distant hills but the crystal clear air, the serinty of the mountains makes a lovely view...

As the river meanders through the Rishikesh Valley, I remember those silent cold nights, when I used to go down to the river along with a Sadhu to stand in the cold water before the sunrise and chant Mantras for hours together. At the far in the distance where the river bends, I can see my favorite place of food. German bakery's Little Buddha restaurant. So many friends that I have had met and made there...

A silent place for early morning mediation, before the sunrises is being created and is one of my favorite place to be. The river silently flows below, murmuring soft vibrations of energy with in your soul and slowly easing out the essence of ego and self to flower forth and fall...

On the right hand side, the suspension bridge comes to life by early morning.. and by 7 - 8 AM, the traffic comes alive on this and gives a constant call to close the meditation and walk across to either Choti Wala or to Little Buddha for sumptuous breakfast. I usually prefer the road side Chaiwala, just at the other end of the bridge and probably a piece of bread... and then walk all the way to German bakery and sit on the overhang of the second floor overlooking the River Ganges and finish reading the book that I am currently reading. Shankaracharya's Discourse on Gita...

The ashram across the Yoga Ashram, comes alive in the morning and find many devotees going about their morning meditations...

Some like this lady, is deep in her thoughts, looking for some long lost reason in the distance of life... lived.

As I started back on my journey back to Dehradun, to catch up with my late night train to Delhi, the high mountain peaks got me to promise to be back...

The setting sun, illuminated my path and the thoughts that filled my self, reminded me how important it is to live in this now, savour the moments passing by and be fully within this 'now'. Life is not lived in the past or the future, it is in the present and when we learn to live in the present, fully wholly we know life as it is... not what it was and can be... in future.

Just listen with laughter in your heart
The soft breeze do sing
The beautiful life's love song

A beautiful sunset on the way, gave me a farewell and I look forward to being in Dev Bhoomi Rishikesh again... I hope you have enjoyed this walk with me ...

WANDERLUST: Neelkanth Mahadev Temple - Rishikesh

New Year usually brings me to the most spiritual place – Rishikesh on the foothills of Himalayas.
My stay at Sivananda Ashram, specially at Guru Nivas on the banks of Holy River Ganges, has always been a pleasure and spiritually uplifting. But in this post, I am sharing my journey to one of the most powerful temples of Shiva around Rishikesh - Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. The 4 hour trek passes through picturesque dense forest alongside serene rivers Pankaja and Madhumati. But before I take you on to a journey through my images captured on the way, I would like to share…

A brief note on Neelkanth Mahadev Temple...

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is situated at a height of 1330 meters dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, the place where the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple currently stands is the sacred location where Lord Shiva consumed the poison Halahala that originated from the sea when Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) churned the sea in order to obtain Amrita. The poison emanated during the Samudramanthan (churning of ocean) made his throat blue in color. Thus, Lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth, literally meaning The Blue Throated One.

Now come and walk with me… and hope that you will feel the energy, the serenity and the bliss I experience there.

The morning’s at the Guru Nivas are usually beautiful with the sunlight peaking around the surrounding hills and the soft flow of Ganges is very inviting for meditation sessions as well as few cups of hot tea brewed on the ghat, specially in the cold winter morning.

The Ghat near the Guru Nivas - Sivananda Ashram
The wall with blue color is the steps from Guru Nivas
On the day of my journey to Neelkanth Temple, I wanted to have a ritual bath in one of the most beautiful ghat in Rishikesh – Triveni Ghat.

The picturesque Triveni Ghat - Rishikesh
Well I was not the only one around with same idea.

A sadhu getting ready ... at Triveni Ghat Rishikesh

Some are all set to go...
And as you leave the banks of Ganges, you come across beautiful valleys of the river that takes you almost half the way to Neelkanth....

The beautiful valley and the river along side the trek...
I was really surprised to see this small kid happily walking towards Neelkanth Mahadev Temple which was 12 KM's away... and in that winter chill without any shirt on.... Well that is how traditional Brahmins used to go to the temple...
Some of the trekkers of all size...

A hidden cave... and a beautiful water fall - on the way to Neelkanth
This is one of my favorite places to take rest on the way... Actually there is a small cave behind the curtain of waterfall, where there is a small Shivalinga is placed and some one always comes and do traditional Puja... so you always find some flower on the stone Shivalinga there... This I have been seeing for almost a decade now...

Offerings to Lord Shiva - At Neelkanth Temple
It was around 2PM, when we reached the temple and it was a pleasure to be greeted with flowers, incense and sound of Om Namah Shivaya filling up the environment...

And the Neelkanth Mahadev, inside the sanctum
ॐ नमः शिवाय
OM NAMAH SHIVAYA
Its believed that one who prays here even for little time, gets manifold benefits. Many Tantriks, Sadhu's and Yogi's come in the forest around here and do their rituals and sadhanas ... to get siddhi's and other Tantrik powers. For me, I have always found it to be very serene and peaceful to spend some time, in Mantra Yoga and meditation... May you all feel the energy of the place, through these images...

The Sunset over the Holy River Ganges - At Sivananda Ashram
At the end of the journey, I reached to the Muni Ki Reti (Sand beach of Yogi's) and watched the sun go down on a very uplifting day. The soft murmur of river flowing along side brought many beautiful memories associated with this place and then to my favorite place Buddha's Cafe down the beach...
Hope you have enjoyed this journey with me and may you all have the blessings of supreme cosmic source of peace and happiness that you believe in...

The long walk to Rishikesh - Kaanwarias

WANDERLUST: The long walk to Rishikesh - Kanwarias

This time, as I was travelling to Rishikesh to spend some time on the banks of Holy River Gange’s and in Shivananda Asharm, I realise that it’s difficult to take to the usual roads that have been clogged by Kanwaria’s and govt  had diverted all the normal routes  for general traffic. It was a long detour for me to reach Rishikesh.

Every year the roads to pilgrim places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Gangotri or Gaumukh (the glacier from where the Ganga originates) in Uttaranchal turns into flaming orange color with Kanwars – the saffron clad devotees, who’s mission is to collect holy ganges water from these holy places and consecrate the Shiva Linga’s at their villages and homes.

Its written Hindu Scripture’s that at the time of Samudra Manthan (churning of the sea) both ambrosia (amrit ) and poison surfaced. While every one wanted amrit, no one wanted to have poison. Since it was necessary to consume the poison as otherwise it would have poison the earth, Lord Shiva drank the poison. As His consort Parvati Devi protested this act, she stopped the poison going into the stomach by holding it at adam’s apple, which turned blue (Hence He got to be known as Neel Kanth - Blue Adam’s Apple). Yet the poison caused tremendous heat in Shiva’s body. It is to pacify this heat that Gangajal (water from the Ganga) is poured over Shivlingas, a process known as jalabhishek.

It is a convention that water- pot (kanwar) must not touch the ground till the time of consecration. Chanting Har Har Mahadev, the Kanwariyas carry the vessels containing the holy water on their shoulders. All along the route voluntary organisations as well as the government put-up make-shift stands where the kanwars can be kept. They also put-up food and medical stalls for the benefit of the yatris.

The craze for becoming a Kanwariya has increased so much that for almost 20 days normal life comes to standstill in most of these states. The main highways connecting the rest of the North India to Haridwar are closed for heavy traffic to facilitate the safe passage of the devotees.

The Rishikesh, being the Dev Bhoomi – Land of God, was totally clogged with Kanwarias. All night long chanting, walking and running by Dak Kanwars – The Devotees who cover the whole distance by running, which in some case can be as long as 100-150 KMs. But the Shivanand Ashram, where I stayed has its usual calmness within.

Coming down from Ashram at night to be with the Holy Ganges is in itself a powerful ritual but bathing at early morning and then meditation at the bank of the river till sun rise is very uplifting and cleansing.

Brief Note about Kanwar's
Text from Wikipedia
The Kānvar Yatrā or Kavad Yatra (Devanagari: काँवर यात्रा or कांवड़ यात्रा) is annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva, known as Kānvarias, to Hindu pilgrimage places of HaridwarGaumukh  and  Gangotri in Uttarakhand to fetch holy waters of Ganges RiverGanga Jal, which is later offered at their local Shiva temples. TheYatra takes place during the sacred month of Shravan (Saawan) (July -August), according to the Hindu calendar. The Yatra used to be a small affair undertaken by a few saints and older devotees till the 1990s, when it started gaining popularity, today lakhs of devotees from surrounding states of DelhiUttar Pradesh,HaryanaRajasthanPunjab and some from as far as BiharJharkhandChhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh reach these places to participate in Kanwar Mela, in 2003. 5.5 Million pilgrims reached Haridwar, with traffic growing each year, heavy security measured are undertaken by the government and the traffic on Delhi-Haridwar national highway  (National Highway 58)is diverted for the period.

UP, CLOSE & PERSONAL : From A Software Professional To A Swami

Swami Yatidharmanand
UPDATE: This interview of Swami Yatidharmananda was posted almost two years back and here is the latest news about his leaving the Sivanada Ashram and going, on his own journey, a different spiritual path.... as said below in his own words...

"Given the circumstances in the physical absence of Guru Maharaj the mandate of Swamiji given to me cannot be fulfilled. I tried my best in all these years but the existing governing body is not keen in doing it. Hence, I am stepping out of the ashram premises to fulfil the task which is the mission of my life on my own. Those of you who wish to help me in digitizing and keeping the images of Guru Maharaj alive are most welcome for all support.

That there should be no illusion about the fact that henceforth I have nothing to do with Divine Life Society
." -Swami Yatidharmananda

If you would like to connect with him, please click here and leave a comment on his post announcing the same...

Now back to the interview...

A son of a business man as well as a popular Magician; Software professional, working in Hong Kong, who enjoyed Horse races and many times won small jack pots; Ambition to have large house, servants, large tract of land and nice cars…. Well that is all that it takes to make a Swami.

Well almost! Just add a burning desire to seek and serve one’s Guru – the spiritual master.

This is the unbelievable story of my long time friend, Swami Yatidharmanand of one of the most beautiful, revered and oldest ashram “Shivanand Ashram”, on the foot hills of mighty Himalayas, on the banks of Holy River Ganges in the small beautiful spiritual town Rishikesh – the spiritual capital of the world as some believes it to be.

Rishikesh and Holy River Ganges
from Sivananda Ashram
I met Swami Yatidharmanand in connection with some of the Multimedia graphic designs which Swami Ji was working with a friend of mine from a local TV channel. The project was to save the original videos of Guru Ji – Swami Chidananda Ji, the head of Shivanand Ashram at that time. Later on, when I went on my own to visit to Rishikesh to see his work on restoration of Old audio and video documents, I was pleasantly surprised to find a top of the line recording studio set up in the ashram. Swami Ji had taken up the task of saving thousands of old videos, audios. He was converting manuscripts to electronic documents of various spiritual heads. During the last decade he has done invaluable service of saving thousands of documents, audio’s and videos, taking time out of his spiritual practices, and continues the work passionately in his unique unassuming way. When asked, he says that this is his way of doing service to his Guru Ji.

I spent few days in the ashram, meeting the other yogi’s, meditating in the various prayer halls, attending chanting, rituals and prayers. Almost half of the attendees, in these sessions, I noticed from European and western countries. Those few days were the most blissful time of my own experience and spiritual learning process. I was very fortunate to stay in the Guru Niwas on the bank of holy River Ganges – the place where Guru Chidananda Swami Ji used to stay and pray. This, in itself, was quite enchanting and profound experience for me. Early morning, one wakes up to the tolling bells, sounds of mantra chants and scents of burning incense, already attuned to receive the energy and the spiritual vibrations.

Myself at Guru Nivas at
Sivananda Ashram 2004
In this setting, as I spent most of my time with Swami Ji, I started thinking about what makes one leave one’s family life and discard all relationship, material possessions and devote himself to a concept, to an idea or to a religious philosophy. Soon, I was thinking of why and how Swami Yatidharmanand got on to this spiritual path. In trying to understand what made him to become a Swami… and why, I started asking him about his previous life and his family? Initially he was quite reluctant but slowly after many years persistent enquiry, I was able to piece together his past life and the path to the present life of an ordained Swami.

So here is the story of a young boy, son of a spice merchant and a popular magician; story of a Software professional working in Hong Kong, about his journey from a materialistic world towards fulfilling his own destiny.

At the age of 10-11, playing among the other kids on the banks of river in a small town Cuttack, Orissa, young Yatidharmanand had lot of questions, most of which were left unanswered for a long time. Even though his father, a famous magician as well as a dedicated devotee of Guru Ji (Swami Chidananda Ji from Shivanand Ashram) were all there to provide the answers, he did not get them. Probably the time was not ready for him to be on this spiritual path. He had a happy childhood among brothers, sisters and friends as his father was a prosperous, well respected Spice merchant and a popular magician. Most of his time away from school was spent in company of his father and his Guru Ji, on his lecture tours. His father used to perform magical feats of materializing spiritual books from thin air, bring out garlands from magic hats etc, to attract and retain the simple village folks, to propagate Hindu religious philosophy with Swami Ji’s spiritual discourse. Over the period of many years, his father had set up a good business for the family, with an idea to leave it all behind to take care of his family when his time is to retire. His father had made up his mind long time back to join on the footsteps of his guru and renounce all to become a Sadhu at the right time. That day arrived too soon for young Yati. The business was not yet fully established and as his father left, it slowly died a natural death leaving Yati with his mother, sister and brothers to care of.

After a protracted struggle, to survive in the poverty that followed, he one day decided to go to Rishikesh to confront Guru Ji and his father. The meeting with his father proved to be very impersonal as his father was well on his own spiritual journey. As his father rightfully believed that he had completed all his duties towards family, he was not interested in going back to take care of the family that he has had renounced long time back. So he gently guided his son to his Guru Ji to listen to him and seek advice.

Yati, next day, in his own young arrogance that comes from immaturity, asked Guru Ji, as he was sitting in the Samadhi hall with his set of devotees, what are use of such spirituality, service and God when one’s own family suffers due to one person’s personal bliss. Guru Ji softly told him that he does not have answer so why not ask Gurudev Swami Sivananda Ji and I am sure he will give all the answers. Being young and hot headed, Yati did not accept this answer as he was thinking, what stupidity is this, where is Swami Sivananda and how can I ask him a question as he had passed away even before I was born! Swami Yatidharmanand says that Guru Ji read his thoughts and told him very sternly and authoritatively “Look! Do not ever think that Swami Sivananda Ji is not here. He is very much present here.”

This was a big jolt to the young man as he could not believe that Guru Ji would know what he was thinking. Although Yati at that time knew that this is just a ruse to calm him, he did not dare to disobey Guru Ji and walked into the Samadhi Shrine of Gurudev Swami Sivananda Ji. There he repeated the same questions to him, skeptically. Swami Yatidharmanand told me about that incident in his life that what happened there at that time is something that he himself was not able to comprehend. He came out of the temple dazed, in trance yet relaxed. Although it felt like few minutes in the temple, he later realised that it was almost an hour there with Guru Swami Sivananda Ji.

He says, from then on, Guru Ji took charge of his life in his own hands. He sent him to Delhi to do technical studies. So young Yati was packed off to Delhi, to get enrolled in NIIT, learning computers and studying software programming for many years.

Yati’s professional career started with NIIT and he moved on working as a software professional in various small companies and from there he migrated to Hong Kong, to work for a International Garment house, as a Computer Programmer. As in retaliation to this forced studies and family life, Yati went all out to earn as much money as possible and as early as possible so that he can full fill his own commitments towards his family, that he had left behind in India. Swami Yatidharmanand softly smiled when he recollected that he never had any other focus in his life but only to make money in order to get back to his old rich spoiled lifestyle. He remembers that as he used to go to his office in Hong Kong, through 3 shopping malls, he always aspired to own things on the shop fronts and as he was not able to afford then at that time, he would bend his head down to avoid looking and then desiring them all. Now he says that the God is so great, Guru Ji is so loving that whatever I have desired at that time, I would  get it some way by the grace of Guru Ji even at that time.

In 1995, miraculously the family money problem was solved. His brother found a job for himself and informed Young Yati that he need not worry about the family now as he himself can take care of the family.
Swami Yatidharmanand with Guru Ji
As his basic drive to work, disappeared, Yati lost all his interest in earning money. He left the job and came back to India and stayed for few weeks in Mumbai with a friend. At that point of time, Swami Ji told me that he was very confused as to what to do with his life. After long search within himself, he realised his desire to serve Guru Ji and finally after long deliberation, requested Guru Ji’s permission for the same. After initial tough resistance as well as many tries to discourage him for this ascetic life, (Swami Ji remembers that Guru Ji even made me take permission from all family members as well as my mother) finally took him under his wings.

When I asked him about his spiritual practices, he simply says, “From the beginning, I never understood spirituality, but somehow I was always happy serving. I just wanted to serve”. And when he was asked, where is he now on his spiritual growth, He says, “I am still serving and will continue to serve as long as I can” He says, its very nice to get away from all this materialistic world and be alone within your thoughts and devotion, but then some one has to serve, so that the society is more frictionless and peaceful, may be that is where I am now, serving.

And what a great service he is doing, in his own small way, for almost a decade now. To save thousands and thousands of audio, video clips, manuscripts of the ashram, which are on the verge of getting destroyed, by working day and night alone in the studio, fighting against time to save all that he can…
